Yesterday, I went to work wearing my favorite heels. By the time I sat down to lunch, both ankles were swollen and sore. By the time I got home, I could barely walk. Lately this has been happening more and more often. Could I really have ankle arthritis like my mother suggests, even though I am only forty years old?
What Are The Causes Of Arthritis?
While it is true that the older we become, the more susceptible we are to arthritis. However, it is not the old person’s disease many would like to believe it is. In fact, younger women are much more susceptible to this disease than men, especially ankle arthritis and arthritis of the feet. This is due to our tendency to wear those wonderfully beautiful high heels.
That is not the only cause, though. Ankle arthritis and other forms of arthritis may be caused by injury to the area or by obesity. Also, some forms of arthritis, osteoarthritis, have been connected to a history of the disease in the gene pool. So, if your family has osteoarthritis, chances are higher that you will as well.
What Are The Symptoms Of Ankle Arthritis?
Like any other form of arthritis, ankle arthritis causes swelling and pain in the joint. There are three bones that make up the ankle joint: tibia, fibula and the talus. Any one or a combination of the three may be affected by arthritis, which causes tremendous pain and may restrict mobility. It is, unfortunately, difficult to assess the progression of ankle arthritis without question, because of factors like activity level and past injury.
There are, however, treatments available for those who suffer from this form of arthritis. One of the first steps is to limit or exclude high heels from daily wear and then visit your local doctor. He will likely have you begin a regimen of exercise designed to maintain mobility and alleviate pain. Next, be aware that there are over-the-counter medications designed to help with the pain level as well: these include acetaminophen, NSAIDS and topical ointments. Be aware, however, that these have side effects, so make sure you know what they are before trying them.
While it is true that you may not be able to work all day from now on in those gorgeous heels, you can find relief from the pain of ankle arthritis. It is key to have a proper diagnosis from a trained physician before trying any therapy. However, knowing is half of the battle. Then take an active approach to pain management with exercise and medicines in moderation. Remember, too, if those swollen ankles need more help, there are surgeries available.
